Minor carpentry and wood repair.

Rotten and damaged wood dealt with before the paint goes on. We look for it during the evaluation, and if more shows up once work starts, you hear about it before we touch it.

The standard

We do not paint over a problem.

Our standard is to address the condition of the surface before applying the finish, rather than simply covering an existing problem with paint. That is why carpentry repair exists as part of what we do — not as an upsell, but because a coating over rotten wood is a coating that fails.

What to look for

The paint tells you before the wood does.

Rot is usually visible as a paint problem first. If any of these sound like your house, it is worth having someone look before the next repaint rather than after it.

The things homeowners notice first

What you see
What it usually means
Paint that keeps peeling in the same spot
The wood underneath is holding moisture, so the coating has nothing sound to grip
A soffit or fascia board that has gone dark
Water is getting in above it — often a gutter or a flashing detail
Trim that feels soft when you press it
Rot is already through the surface; paint will not stop it
Gaps opening at joints and around windows
Caulk has failed and is letting water behind the finish
Staining below a window or a deck ledger
Water running where it should be shedding
What ‘minor’ means

The line between a repair and a rebuild.

Our limit is clear on cabinets: minor imperfections and minor wood damage can be addressed through preparation, but structurally broken components are not repaired. The same principle runs through our exterior work.

If we find more once we start

You hear about it before we do it.

We look for rotten or damaged wood during our initial evaluation. Some of it is only visible once the work begins.

Repairs identified during the evaluation are written into the proposal. Anything found later is discussed with you before it is done.

The repair found halfway through

This is the part of a painting project people dread, so it is worth being plain about. Some rot is only visible once the old finish comes off. When that happens we stop, show you what we found, and price it before we carry on — it does not get absorbed silently and it does not appear as a surprise at the end.

You can also say no. Painting over it is not what we would recommend, and we will tell you what we think it costs you later, but it stays your decision and your house.

Soft wood, peeling paint that keeps coming back, a soffit that has gone dark — tell us and we will look at it during the consultation.
